The development of rapid, more accurate, non-invasive diagnostic techniques is imperative to the evolution of modern medicine. At Syft Technologies we are working with a range of medical and research professionals to investigate and develop a suite of laboratory and breath-based non-invasive diagnostic techniques, using the SIFT-MS technology platform.

This work includes:

Diagnostic laboratory applications:

• The detection and quantitation of microbial VOCs (MVOCs) from the headspace above bacterial blood cultures, and infected urine samples. This enables early detection of infection and differentiation of the causative agent
• The development of a high-throughput multiplex assay of workers' urine, for detection of exposure to toxic industrial chemicals.

Breath-based studies:

• Monitoring patients' breath during haemodialysis to determine/predict the optimal dialysis dose (time)
• Monitoring the breath of renal transplant patients to non-invasively predict renal transplant rejection, and to differentiate this condition from drug (e.g., cyclosporin) toxicity
• The discovery of new, exhaled biomarkers of eosinophilic and neutrophilic inflammation, and we are currently studying the behaviour of these biomarkers in inflammatory disease, including asthma and COPD
• ED applications, in particular the diagnosis of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and its differentiation from other causes of acute chest pain
• Detection of MVOCs in breath samples, for diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis
• Monitoring of ICU patients to detect, in real-time, metabolic disruption and sepsis.
